How to Buy the Best Laptop Computer for the Best Price

If you're considering getting a new laptop computer, you may feel confused and overwhelmed by all the choices that are available. There are so many different brands, models and styles of laptop computers that it's easy to buy too little or too much computer for your needs. It's also important to consider the future when buying a laptop computer. Buying ahead of the market will add years to the useful lifespan your new laptop computer.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

Read online reviews of different laptop computer brands and models. Make sure that you read both expert or professional reviews and user reviews of laptop computers. The experts or professionals will give you a clear picture of the features of each different laptop computer, and may also provide comparisons between different brands and models to help you find which one is best. Reviews by laptop users can give you an idea of how well the laptop computer performs over the long term. They can also warn you about any product defects in a specific laptop computer model.

  2. Step 2

Consider the size and weight of the laptop computer. A very small, light-weight, ultra-portable laptop computer is good for when you're on the go, but it will probably have a smaller keyboard and display, a slower processor, a smaller hard drive and less RAM than a larger computer. Larger laptop computers are good for entertainment, gaming, graphics processing and video editing, but will be somewhat more expensive and more difficult to transport. Also, if you do a great deal of typing, consider getting a laptop computer with a full-sized keyboard.

  3. Step 3

Choose a multi-core mobile processor. Multi-core processors are typically faster, more energy efficient and better for multi-tasking than single-core processors. Mobile processors are also good at saving electricity while you're working on your new laptop computer, whether you're plugged in or running on battery power.

  4. Step 4

Choose a laptop computer with plenty of RAM. Don't settle for a new laptop computer with 1 to 2 GB of RAM; it will be obsolete next year. Instead, buy as much memory as you can afford for your laptop computer. Since laptop computer are difficult and expensive to upgrade, getting the memory now will save you a lot of money over the long term.

  5. Step 5

Choose the biggest hard drive you can afford that meets your needs. As time passes, there is a greater premium on hard drive space. If you will use your new laptop computer for multimedia such as pictures and videos, that 160 GB hard drive will probably be filled to the brim in just a few years. If you only use the computer for email and surfing the Internet, chances are a smaller hard drive will be fine.

  6. Step 6

Look at a laptop computer with wireless networking capability. For best results, get one with a Wireless N adapter. Wireless B or G is the minimum standard you should consider. Even if you don't have a wireless network in your home now, chances are you will need wireless networking in the future. A good wireless adapter is a necessity if you plan to use your laptop computer in wireless locations such as hotels or wireless hotspots.

  7. Step 7

Shop around. Many computer stores offer sales for popular laptop computer brands and models. Also, many computer stores offer zero interest financing for loan periods of over 1 year. Watch your local newspaper for computer store flyers advertising steep discounts on your chosen brand and model laptop computer.

How to Install a Wireless Router to a Laptop

A wireless router is a networking device that operates as a gateway joining your laptop and your high-speed modem. It also acts as a wireless access point that communicates with your wireless devices (such as game consoles) and your laptop, connecting them to your wireless network. Before you can use your wireless router with your laptop, you must connect the laptop, modem and wireless router using Ethernet cables, and configure the wireless router's settings.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • High-speed modem Ethernet cables
  1. Step 1

Connect the high-speed modem to the wireless router. Turn off and unplug your cable modem's power before connecting it to your wireless router with an Ethernet cable. Plug the Ethernet cable into the Ethernet jack on the back of your high-speed modem and plug the other end into the Internet/Modem port on the back of your wireless router. This port is usually next to the wireless router's power jack.

  2. Step 2

Connect your laptop to the wireless router using another Ethernet cable. Shut down your laptop before connecting it to the wireless router. Plug the Ethernet cable that came with your wireless router into your laptop's Ethernet jack, which is located on the back of your laptop. Plug the other end of the Ethernet cable into one of the LAN ports on the back of your wireless router. Wireless routers have several LAN ports; it does not matter which one you use.

  3. Step 3

First, turn on your high-speed modem, then wait 2 minutes. This gives the modem time to connect to your Internet service provider's server. Make sure your modem's status lights show that it has successfully connected. Next, plug the wireless router's power adapter into the wireless router and into a power outlet. Wait 2 minutes for your wireless router to recognize your modem. You will know that it has successfully connected if all of the lights on the front of the wireless router are on. Finally, turn on your laptop. If you do not turn on these devices in this order, you may not be able to connect to the Internet.

  4. Step 4

Log on to the wireless router's URL. Open up a web browser on your laptop. In the address bar, type in the wireless router's address, which can be found in the router's manual or the manufacturer's website. Press "Enter" or click "Go." This will make your laptop communicate with the router and load the router's settings page.

  5. Step 5

Input the username and password. After you enter the wireless router's URL, a dialog box will appear requiring you to enter a username and password. Most wireless routers' default username is "admin" and the default password is "password" or is left blank. Keep in mind that the text boxes are case-sensitive.

  6. Step 6

Configure your router's settings and wireless settings. Depending on the brand of your wireless router, the page may automatically load a setup wizard to complete configuration of the router. Simply follow the onscreen instructions, then log out of the page to finish installing the router to your laptop. Otherwise, you can insert the wireless router's installation CD and follow its instructions.

How to Install a Wireless Modem on a Laptop Computer

A wireless modem provides higher flexibility and mobility, allowing you to access the Internet from a laptop computer anywhere in your home or office. A wireless modem can be installed on a laptop in two phases: connecting the modem and configuring the wireless connection. Your cell phone can also be used as a wireless modem. Here’s how you can install wireless serivce

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

Connecting a broadband wireless modem

Step 1
Make sure you have all equipment necessary for installing the wireless modem and setting up the broadband wireless internet connection on your laptop. The package should include the Wireless modem (or wireless adapter), installation CD ROM with a manual, Ethernet Cable (or USB cable in case of a wireless USB modem), a wireless antenna (equipped with wireless standards such as 802.11a, 802.11b, or 802.11g) and a power adapter. Call the vendor (or the manufacturer) if any of the above are missing.

  1. Step 2

Read the manual to understand each of the devices in the package. For example, a wireless antenna is used to connect the wireless broadband packets; ethernet cable is used to connect the desktop computer with the modem.

  2. Step 3

Attach your wireless antenna to the modem.

  3. Step 4

Hook up an Ethernet Cable from your laptop to a LAN/Ethernet Port in the modem. Alternatively, If you have a wireless USB modem, which is recommended for laptops, connect the USB cable to the USB port of the laptop.

  4. Step 5

Ensure proper connectivity of the devices before you begin setup of the wireless modem. Connect the power adapter to the power connector of the modem, plug in and switch it on.

  5. Setting up the Wireless Modem

  6. Step 1

Open your Web browser and enter the URL of the modem’s administrative site listed in the user's manual. If you cannot locate it, contact the modem manufacturer’s customer service.

  7. Step 2

Login to the admin section by entering the username and password provided in the user manual. Again, if you cannot locate these, call the modem manufacturer’s customer service. Usually, the default username and password is “admin.” You will now be logged in.

  8. Step 3

Select the Internet connection type. There are four types of internet connections — "Dynamic IP Address," "Static IP Address," "PPPoE/PPPoA" and "Bridge Mode." Call your Internet service provider (ISP) to inquire about what type of setting would be best suited for their wireless service.

  9. Step 4

Choose "Dynamic IP Address" for getting an IP address automatically from the ISP’s server. For every wireless internet connection, you are given an IP address. In some cases the IP address is dynamic (changes each time you connect to the internet), and in others it is static (the IP address is retained even after you disconnect and reconnect to the internet). If the address is dynamic, you will have to choose this setting so that the modem automatically takes the IP from the ISP’s (Internet Service Provider's) server whenever a new wireless connection is established. Enter your modem’s MAC Address (usually found at the back of the modem) and other details. Refer to the user manual or call the modem manufacturer’s customer service to get these details.

  10. Step 5

Select "Static IP Address" if you are provided with a static IP. You need to fill in the VPI, VCI, IP Address, Subnet Mask, ISP Gateway Address, Server Address, Primary DNS Address, Secondary DSN Address and connection type. These details can be obtained from your ISP.

  11. Step 6

Opt for "PPPoE/PPPoA" if your ISP uses this type of connection. DSL users may use this connection. Enter the details of User name, Password and other details. These will be provided by your ISP.

  12. Step 7

Select the "Bridge Mode" if your ISP uses this connection type. Enter the relevant details provided by your ISP.

  13. Step 8

Finish the process by clicking on the "Finish" icon. Your modem should now be set up.

  14. Step 9

Enter any URL Address in Internet Explorer to check if the connection is running.

  15. Using a Cell Phone as a Wireless Modem for Dial Up Connection

  16. Step 1

If your cell phone provider offers wireless serivce, your cell phone (with a built-in wireless modem) can access a dial up internet connection. Ensure that your phone has a built-in modem and that it's activated. Call your cell phone service provider’s customer service for details on how to activate your modem's cell phone.

  17. Step 2

You'll need a specialized USB cable to connect the cell phone with your laptop, available directly from your service provider or at stores like Radioshack. The cable is part of a wireless installation kit that also includes an installation CD. Connect the cell phone with your laptop using the special USB cable. Once connected, your laptop should detect the new hardware device.

  18. Step 3

Depending on your operating system, the laptop may automatically install all drivers necessary for setting up the wireless modem or it may prompt you to install the drivers manually. If prompted, insert the installation CD and follow instructions given on the screen. After all drivers are installed, the operating system will confirm that your new hardware is ready to use.

  19. Step 4

Install the dialer software included in the installation CD. Insert your username, password and dial up number in the dialer. These are provided by the service provider. You are now set to use your cell phone as a wireless modem.

Tips & Warnings
  • These steps are generic and the installation process varies from one modem to another. Always refer to your user manual before beginning installation.
  • Ask for technical support from the modem manufacture if the process is not clear. They may assist you with a professional installation.

Five Tips to Buy a Good Laptop

Todays market is crowded with offers from computer vendors that want to sell you their products. And sometimes these offers promote computers and accessories that don't satisfy your personal requirements - and just dig a big whole in your pocket. If you are a student, a small business owner, or just a regular professional, you need to look for a laptop that will be reliable and at the same time will not suck all your money.

These are a set of tips that have worked for me and several other people when buying laptop computers. Although the number of options in the market is vast, there are a few things that, when you put the required attention, will result in an excellent buying choice.

1. Be aware of the warranty

One of the most overlooked issues when buying a laptop is the warranty. In the excitement of the new toy you don't even care about this. However, when the laptop has a problem this can be a real headache.

Make sure that you get informed if the warranty for your equipment is good enough. Check with friends that had to use the customer services if the company is efficient. Finally, check if you need to buy an additional coverage package.

2. Choose a processor that is adequate but not too expensive

Processors are the engine of your laptop. If you get a fast one, you can run a lot of applications faster. That is why processor is such an important factor in choosing a laptop.

These days, however, speed is not the only indicator of capacity for a processor. Some processors are more efficient, even at lower speeds. Higher speeds also mean higher temperatures, which can be difficult to manage in a small laptop -- they can literally burn under the heat.

Many processor nowadays are dual, which means that they have a copy of itself available for similar work. This is great because different programs can use different processors, and therefore can run faster as a result. Dual cores are the ones with such capability, and quad-cores (with four processors) are coming to the market.

3. Find a laptop with enough room for growth

Laptops are different from desktop computers mainly in that it is difficult to expand its capacity. If your hard disk, for example, gets full after a few months, it is difficult to replace it with a bigger one. Especially if you find out that this is not allowed by the company.

You should always plan to buy a laptop that has features that allow it to grow without major headaches. For example, extra slots for memory extension, several ports for communication with external devices, replaceable drives, etc. This will certainly pay off when you need to improve your laptop in the future.

4. Do not be cheap with memory: you always need more

Memory is like money: you always need more. The general law of programming is that each program is made to use ALL memory available at any given time. And companies spend their time creating software that tries to eat even more memory, such as Windows Vista, Java programs, etc.

The good thing is that memory is cheap these days. So, make a good investment and buy enough memory to satisfy the hunger of your preferred applications.

5. Hark disk is essential

One feature that can make or kill your laptop is the hard disk. It is difficult to replace hard disks, and if your is too small it won't fit all the information you need.

Prefer hard disks with generous sizes, even if you have to pay a little more. It is good investment, because it will save you a lot of trouble when you try to install the new multi-Giga software or when you try to store the record you made of your children.

Ways to Make Your Laptop Battery Last Longer

Yes, you can take that transcontinental -- or transoceanic -- flight, without lugging along a spare battery.

It's happened to many an entrepreneur. You board a five-hour flight from, say San Francisco to New York, with plans to finish the stack of work tucked into your laptop case. An airplane is often a great place to be productive, thanks to the absence of nagging colleagues, e-mail, ringing phones, memos, and faxes at 30,000 feet -- provided the technology you need is in working order

Sometimes, you barely make it over South Dakota before your computer warns you it's about to "hibernate" as you're battery power is at just five percent. Now how exactly do you plan to finish that sales report before you land?

Energy management has been a problem since the earliest days of mobile computing. Drains on a battery include virtually every component on your laptop, including the screen, the hard drive, the CD-ROM and DVD-ROM, and other peripherals. The biggest culprit? DVD movies, which cause the screen to run at full power for the life of the movie.

Unfortunately, there is no magic-bullet solution. But there is something you can do aside from lugging a spare battery. The following are a few tips for squeezing more juice out of your laptop:
Dim the lights

You'll certainly need to see your screen, but just how bright do you need it to be? Screens lighted at full strength eat up 15 percent more battery life than if your battery was at 50 percent brightness, says Dell. So, be sure to squeeze more life out of your laptop by reducing the brightness of your monitor a great deal.

Limit your entertainment
The battery will drain faster if there's a spinning disc in your CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, such as a game, music CD or DVD movie. Some games offer you the choice to install to the hard drive, so choose this option, as you'll get more life out of your laptop than using the CD-ROM or DVD player, which are massive battery consumers. With other entertainment, your best power value is to work from the hard drive.

Unplug everything
Make sure you have no devices plugged into the laptop that can drain its power, such as a Webcam, USB thumb-stick, or wireless PC card. According to Dell, connected peripherals can impact battery life by up to 12 percent (depending on the peripheral), so get used to the touchpad instead of using an external mouse when you're away from an electrical outlet. What eats up the most battery power? Wireless connectivity, such as Wi-Fi and WWAN, so be sure to turn this feature off if you don't need it (not an issue for airplanes where this should be turned off).

Reduce power consumption
Camille Alcasid, who runs Westside Websites, a Santa Monica, Calif.-based development firm, recommends changing the "Power Options" found on Windows XP. Users can find it in the Control Panel and use it to manually reduce the power consumption of your laptop. "Typically, you want to be able to work on a spreadsheet or word processing," says Alcasid. "By reducing consumption by a third, you can still use those options and extend your life." You can also set alarms to go off when the battery is about to die (for example, at five percent) so you can safely save your information before powering down.

Charge up
In the better-safe-than-sorry category, it's worth noting that air travelers should make a point of recharging the battery before a flight. Find an electrical outlet while you're waiting for your flight at the gate, a restaurant, or airline lounge.

How To Clean LCD Laptop

Do you miss that shiny new laptop look or can't stand the thought of the misguided executive image? Here's how to brew your own laptop screen cleaning kit using simple household ingredients.

Please read ALL the warnings in the section farther down in this wiki page before attempting to clean any LCD screen! These days, 2009 vs 2005, most manufacturers are no longer recommending using products that contain ANY alcohol, ammonia, or other strong solvents on LCD screens.

If you take great care in the selection of the ingredients for your solution, the containers you are going to mix your solution in, and your choice of cleaning cloths, it is possible to clean your LCD screen with household products. If you are unsure about ANY of the pieces mentioned above, then your safest path is to purchase a package of single use wet/dry commercially available wipes that are designed, and tested, specifically for cleaning LCD and Plasma screens.

Alienware M17x Gaming Laptop Computer (Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9300, 500GB HDD, 8GB)

With a brand-new look and some of the highest-end tech available in a laptop, we're semi-surprised that Alienware has kept the M17x name for its newest 17-inch laptop (even if it loses the X-Files-esque "Area-51" moniker). While the system starts at a reasonable $1,799, you'll need to configure something closer to our $4,849 review unit to really get the benefit of Alienware's years of experience making high-end gaming PCs.

We appreciate the evolved design of the new M17x, which does away with some of the dorm-like qualities of past Alienware systems, making for a (slightly) more sophisticated-looking package. The somewhat goofy custom lighting system remains, but the automotive-inspired front-end grille and edge-to-edge glass on the display offset that.

With an Intel Core 2 Quad Extreme QX9300, dual Nvidia GeForce GTX 280M GPUs, and 1TB of hard-drive space, this is about as powerful as laptops get without resorting to stuffing actual desktop parts in a chassis (as with the AVAdirect Clevo D900F). We often point to less expensive gaming laptops, such as the Asus W90 or the Gateway FX P-series as offering a better bang for your buck, but if you want the very best, and are willing to pay for it, dropping several Gs on the new Alienware M17x will make you the coolest nerd on your block.

We've always gotten down on Alienware for its dorm-room-chic design sensibilities, which seemed more like adolescent sci-fi fantasies than anything someone who could actually drop five grand on a laptop would be interested in. The previous M17x made a few steps in the right direction, de-emphasizing the brand's iconic glowing alien head design and offering a smart matte black finish.

This new version continues the march toward modern minimalist design, with fewer distracting flourishes on the keyboard tray, and a slick edge-to-edge glass overlay on the display. The front edge has also gotten an overhaul, with an angled automotive-inspired grille that helps the overall look from being too slablike. The anodized aluminum case feels heavy and substantial--but also means you won't be taking it on too many trips outside the house (unless you like lugging around almost 15 pounds of computer equipment).

Alienware's Fusion FX lighting and settings control system returns--even more over-the-top than ever. You can now set the color for the backlit keyboard in four separate zones, meaning you can create a rainbowlike design across the keys. The same software package also provides a fairly comprehensive power control suite, which offers more detailed options than the basic Windows Vista power settings, as well as security controls, including facial recognition log-in software.

The previous version's flush touch pad--previously demarcated only by a backlit outline--has been improved, with a very subtle texture, so your finger can more easily tell when it's actually on the touch pad (even if most gamers will plug in an external mouse).

The keyboard has a more traditional tapered key design, rather than the wider, flat keys many laptop makers are partial to these days. Alienware explains that for its core gamer audience, the traditional keys provide more space between the individual letters, which is better for first-person shooters, which make heavy use of the WASD keys. There's also a strip of touch-sensitive controls above the keyboard (also with an adjustable backlit color), but their response was a little slow for us, and there was a confusing lack of onscreen confirmation for some of the commands.

The 17.1-inch wide-screen LCD display offers a 1,920x1,200 native resolution, which is what we'd expect from a high-end 17-inch laptop (less expensive desktop replacements can have 1,440x900 displays). The screen looks crisp and bright, and the edge-to-edge glass overlay adds a seamless feel, but it is subject to glare from light sources. We also wouldn't mind seeing Alienware embrace the trend toward 16:9 displays.

No shortage of ports and connections here, including a rarely seen mini-Firewire port and three separate video output options, including DisplayPort. Multiple audio-outs mean you can easily hook up a set of big PC speakers, which is a plus for high-intensity gaming.

While our review unit was configured with nearly every high-end option available and cost almost $5,000, the M17x actually starts at a much more reasonable $1,799. The specs for that system are somewhat less impressive, with a 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo P8600, a single Nvidia GeForce GTX 260M GPU, 4GB of RAM, a 250GB 7,200rpm hard drive, a DVD burner, and a lower-resolution 1,440x900 screen.

In contrast, we had a 2.53GHz Intel Core 2 Quad Extreme QX9300, along with 8GB of DDR3 RAM, and dual Nvidia GeForce GTX280M graphics card, which moves the M17x to the top of our laptop performance list. One laptop we recently reviewed used a desktop PC 3.33GHz Intel Core i7-975 Extreme Quad Core processor, and was technically faster--but putting desktop parts in a laptop chassis is an entirely different animal. The quad-core Extreme-edition CPU helped in our multitasking tests, but the real-world difference between this and the non-Extreme Core 2 Quad Q9000 found in other high-end desktop replacements isn't enough to call it a must-have upgrade (especially for $750 more than the Q9000).

The real star here is the SLI configuration of Nvidia's GeForce GTX280M. With two of these powerful GPUs working together, we got 168 frames per second at 1,920x1,200 in Unreal Tournament 3, making this our gaming laptop performance leader by a wide margin. Anecdotally, we fired up F.E.A.R. 2 at 19x12 and set most of the graphics options to medium or high for a smooth, impressive experience. Of course, with very few high-profile PC games currently in development, there may not be that many titles that deserve this kind of high-end treatment (one exception may be Bioware's Dragon Age: Origins, one of the few buzz-worthy upcoming games that's being developed for the PC and ported to consoles, rather than the other way around).

Nvidia's GeForce GPUs also include the company's CUDA technology, which lets the GPUs provide extra processing power to certain nongaming tasks, such as video rendering. Keep in mind that you'll have to use CUDA-compatible software, such as CyberLink PowerDirector 7.

Lenovo IdeaPad Y650 Multimedia Laptop

Published April 14, 2009 at 10:49:23 AM, by Daniel Shain
The Lenovo IdeaPad Y650 is a large, fairly capable and highly stylish multimedia notebook offering. The glossy 16-inch widescreen is impressively large, as is the multitouch capable touchpad. Throw in an Intel Core 2 Duo P8700 2.53GHz processor, 4GB RAM, a 320GB HDD, a 256MB NVIDIA GeForce G105M GPU and you’ve got yourself some respectable internals to go with the gorgeous externals. And did we mention the weight is only 5.6lbs, and felt like less? If only the price were a little lower and the keyboard a little larger, this laptop would have some pretty high marks all around.
Design - Case look and feel

Lenovo has clearly put some time into the look of the Y650. The black, subtly honeycombed matte lid is smooth to the touch and easy on the eyes, with nothing marring it save a silver Lenovo logo in the bottom right corner. Above the glossy LCD a black webcam is embedded in the bezel, and the whole display is surrounded by an attractive copper trim. The keyboard is completely white, with a pair of JBL speakers and a couple of buttons surrounding the strangely recessed keyboard (more on that later). Above the keyboard lie a few touch buttons in black, and below it is the nicely oversized touchpad. The touchpad and wrist rests are also white and even the IdeaPad logo in the bottom right corner glows white. The only other color besides white here is the copper trim around the base and the copper function accents on the keyboard keys.
Size and Weight

The IdeaPad Y650 does an excellent job of being large without being either bulky or heavy, and for that it should be commended. With dimensions of 15.4” x 10.2” x 1.0” it almost, but not quite, achieves MacBook-like slimness. It does this despite having a 16-inch screen compared to the MacBook’s 15-incher and only weighing a tenth of a pound more at 5.6 lb. It’s obviously pretty wide compared to standard aspect ratio 14-15 inch laptops, but as long as you know what size laptop you’re getting you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the weight and thickness of this laptop. Considering its size, we were very impressed with the portability.
Keyboard and Touchpad

With a laptop this large you can generally expect a large keyboard. Personally, I’m a fan of dedicated numberpads if they can fit comfortably, and the 16-inch form factor is about where you start to see them appear. However, Lenovo has decided to play tricks with our mind here, taking a keyboard you might see in a 14” laptop and literally shoving it towards the very top of the available keyboard space, giving the whole thing a fairly scrunched look. We can understand the lack of a numberpad, as they aren’t terribly common, but were disappointed to see shrunken keys (like right shift and tab) with so much available space.

The shrunken backspace even went so far as to make an annoying springing noise every time we touched it, as if it weren’t quite settled into its slot. On the flipside, the touchpad is wonderfully large, and even boasts some basic pinch-me multitouch functionality. The keyboard and touchpad are both comfortable to use, with just a little flex in the center and a comfortable gridded feeling respectively. Finally, a few push and touch-sensitive buttons casually surround the keyboard on three sides. The features are nice, but we’re not sure why Lenovo included two different and redundant ways to adjust volume or call up OneKey. We’ll explain more below.
Display Quality

The display quality of the Y650 is well above average. The LED backlit screen is bright and helps fight the glare of the glossy screen, which makes the colors sharp. There is even a button to set the display to “movie mode” with brighter colors still. Horizontal viewing angles are good, although distortion sets in a little sooner than we’d like on such a media-centric unit. Vertical viewing angles are fine though, especially from below.
Connectivity

You can’t shed pounds without making some sacrifices, and the connectivity is a little weaker than we would have hoped. However, we can’t say Lenovo was lacking for creativity, going so far in their space saving measures as to load the DVD tray in the front. There is also HDMI and eSATA, which we’re always happy to see.

The left side of the unit contains the power jack, followed by the HDMI and VGA ports. 1 of the 2 (yes, there’s only 2) USB ports follows this, and then you’ll find the fan exhaust.

The right side features an Ethernet port, Expresscard34 slot (no 54), eSATA, audio in/out and the last USB port.

The front of the laptop sports the DVD drive and a wireless on/off switch, with a few status lights in between.

The back is bereft of ports as the display hinges downward, covering it entirely when in use.
Upgrading

The Y650 has an all-in-one bottom plate that you have to remove to access any of the internals, which makes it easy to do big upgrades, but kind of a pain to do small ones. Our laptop was more or less the high end of the Y650s on Lenovo’s site, but it’s possible to tick down the processor to a P8600 and get 3GB RAM on 32bit Vista if you want to save $100. You could also opt for integrated graphics, but currently it won’t save you a dollar (thanks to a Lenovo sale), so we don’t recommend this unless you’re insanely concerned about battery life. There doesn’t seem to be a way to get a higher resolution screen or bigger battery, both of which would be nice additions.
Features

The IdeaPad Y650 comes loaded with Veriface facial recognition technology, which essentially lets you capture an image of your face with the integrated webcam and use it instead of a password to login. The feature is cool and extremely quick and easy to use, but in extreme cases it can still be hacked just like a password, so it’s no reason to be careless if you store sensitive material on your laptop. The Y650 also comes with the front loading DVD drive, which we’re counting as a feature just for its uniqueness.

Other nice features include the enormous touchpad, measuring 4.4 x 2.5-inches, which Lenovo boasts is the largest on any laptop. There is a touch slider at the top which brings up a menu composed of Easy Capture, Ready Connect, Veriface and OneKey. There is also a touch button to switch between “movie mode” and “regular” and next to that, a touch button to call up Dolby sound software. There are physical buttons on either side of the keyboard, but aside from the power button they only let you adjust volume and call up OneKey. OneKey can be run from the slider and the volume is also a function feature on the regular keyboard, so we suspect these buttons were only put in place to take your mind off the fact that the keyboard is so scrunched.
Performance

On a multimedia notebook we don’t always expect the best performance in terms of gaming, but with a dedicated GPU and plenty of RAM and processor speed, we expected good performance and were not disappointed. For more information on our testing practices, see here: http://www.laptoplogic.com/about/test/

Here the Y650 lags behind the pack, posting less than 2.5 hours during general use. It should be noted that these were under the “natural” settings achieved when disconnecting the power cord. If you use the included battery stretching software to the fullest, it’s likely you can reach just about 3 hours. We said it before about the USB ports, you can’t shed pounds without making sacrifices.

Considering the general use battery life, the Y650 didn’t do too badly here, comparing reasonably well to multimedia laptops like the HDX and FW270. This test was conducted with the brightness and sound-boosting movie mode enabled too. Still, it would be nice to actually finish a movie before the (rather irritating) low battery warning starts to chirp.
Real Life Usage

In general use, the IdeaPad ran cool and fairly quiet, even during DVD playback. It felt surprisingly light and the large widescreen in conjunction with the helpful “movie mode” was excellent for watching media. The relatively short battery life didn’t prove problematic for us, but then again we never tried to take it on the road beyond going to the office and back. With an external mouse and a USB thumb stick in tow it was worrying that there were no other USB options, and we anticipate trouble for those used to leaving their printer plugged in at home or charging electronics in a spare port. The recessed keyboard design also had the unfortunate side effect of extending the palm rests, which is less than comfortable. However it was weirder than it was awkward and didn’t affect typing as much as the shrunken keys themselves did.
Conclusion

The IdeaPad Y650 is surprisingly powerful for a laptop whose power isn’t a selling point. From a beautiful thin design to a large screen and wonderfully small weight, the IdeaPad is stylishly designed for multimedia. Of course, you can’t have your cake and eat it too, so the IdeaPad is a bit skimpy on battery life and ports. It’s not exactly skimpy on price though, with our model costing a total of around $1400 while currently on sale. But if you’re making MacBook comparisons, it suddenly doesn’t look so bad does it?
